Has anyone else seen any details on the new expansion being released soon, Worldwake? From what I have seen, it is an addition to the Zendikar block and continues the Allies theme and introduces the new ability "multikicker". Basically, it lets you pay the kicker cost more than once and get benefits for each time that you pay it. Blue Eyes and I will be attending a Worldwake release party on Feb 7, so we will let you know what we run into and how everything looks. From looking at the spoiler cards, they have some pretty cool stuff coming out. I know that I have always said that I prefer the old cards. While that is still the case, I have gotten a little more into the newer cards since we are doing the Alara league and have found some abilities that I really like in the new stuff. We'll see what happens... |

Well, as a followup to the release party that Blue Eyes and I went to, the Worldwake cards are pretty cool. We did the booster draft (where you open a booster pack, pick a card and pass it to the next person) and there were several times that people wanted to keep half the pack because the cards were just that good. Some of them are just crazy powerful, and one of them was the card that everyone got for attending: Joraga Warcaller. Look it up on gatherer for specifics, but the new ability in Worldwake is Multikicker. It is a kicker that you can pay more than once and get the affect multiple times. For Joraga Warcaller, for every time the multikicker is paid you put a +1+1 counter on the creature, and all other elves get +1+1 for each counter on Joraga. Pretty wicked with a good elf deck... |

Jaraga Warcaller + Doubling Season = Win Sorry, but ever since that card was created, it's impossible for me to see a card with counters without thinking, "Dude, that would REALLY pwn if you added a Doubling Season to it!!" Best part... Doubling Season would activate twice, since you put the counters on the WArcaller, and THEN you put counters on elves... So the Warcaller would get 2x the number of counters, and then the elves would get 4x the counters. If you had more than one... Jackpot! |

Actually, the other elves do not get counters, they just get +1+1 for each counter that is on Warcaller. Yeah, the draft is actually pretty fun. We did a couple of practice drafts over the last couple of weeks (Kamigawa and Ravnica blocks) and this one was the most fun. Perhaps we could arrange to do a draft with the RPGX group sometime in the future? Oh, and Doubling Season would be great for a lot of the multikicker cards. There are a couple of 1 casting cost red and black creatures (possibly other colors, those were all I saw yesterday) that had a kicker of 1 color and 1 colorless. Every time the kicker was paid it got a +1+1 counter. No other fun stuff, but essentially letting a cheap creature have the option of getting bigger if you pull it late in the game instead of being cannon fodder. Pretty nice abilities. I can post some of the other good cards that we picked up later. All I can remember right now is the Amulet of Vitality (lets all permanents that would come into play under your control tapped come in untapped instead) and Eye of Ugin, a useless mythic rare right now because the Eldrazi spell that it is made for will be released in the next expansion (Rise of the Eldrazi). |

One of the new abilities in the Zendikar block that carried over into Worldwake was Landfall. Basically, if you have a card out with Landfall, any time you play a land you get to activate the special ability on that card. These range from tapping creatures or making opponents discard to putting out 1/1 tokens or making something stronger until end of turn. I was going through some old cards yesterday and saw a great card to put into a landfall deck: Storm Cauldron. Storm Cauldron lets you play an additional land each turn, and any time a land it tapped to produce mana it goes back to your hand. Combine this with Walking Atlas, a new artifact creature in Worldwake that you can tap to drop an additional land, and you can play a lot of lands every turn and activate landfall like crazy. Another fun thing from Zendikar and Worldwake that I have not tried to build a deck around yet is all the Ally cards. They have special abilities that are triggered when an Ally is played. If you have 4 Allies on the board and play another one, then the abilities for all 5 will trigger. Some of these have similar abilities to the Landfall ones, like making stuff stronger or putting tokens out, so a deck could easily be built around them as well. I may have to work on this and see how it plays at the next tournament... |
