Square Enix to buy Eidos, delays DQIX By Andrew Webster | ArsTechnica Of all the potential suitors for Tomb Raider publisher Eidos Interactive, Japanese RPG power house Square Enix seemed like the definite underdog. Time Warner already owned a significant number of Eidos shares, and has recently made moves to increase that number. In spite of this, SE went ahead with rumored plans to purchase Eidos, in a continued attempt to extend its Western reach. According to reports, SE put forth an estimated $120.8 million offer to purchase Eidos. The deal would see SE pay $.0.45 per share, three times the asking price at the time the bid occurred on January 14. Since the bid was made public, Eidos' shares have skyrocketed to $0.44, nearly reaching SE's bid. Though the deal looks like a sure thing, there is still the possibility that SE can be outbid if another party tops the offer by 15 percent. "Eidos maintains a strong reputation for high quality development and proven expertise in creating characters and storylines that appeal to consumers," Square Enix President Yoichi Wada said. "Eidos' products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets." At the same time, Square also revealed that it would once again be pushing back the release date of Dragon Quest IX. The Nintendo DS game is now expected to be released on July 11, as opposed to the expected March 29, which could possibly be related to rumors that the game will also be coming to the Wii. This marks just the latest in a series of delays, as the game was originally being planned for a 2007 launch. The move to purchase Eidos seems perfectly in line with SE's recent Western push, which includes a publishing deal with Gas Powered Games and a new Los Angeles based studio. If the deal does eventually go through, Square expects it to be finalized in April. We'll keep you updated as further details arise. |

I never would have thought that Eidios would be in trouble. It woul be so cool if Enix picked up some of the franchises that we have been missing. Maybe the hitman series or even a Legacy of Kain game. I don't know that Enix would do it the way I would want, but I know it would be pretty if nothing else. Also, this reminds me, Dix... you need to come over this weekend and try out Infinite Undiscovery with me. I bought this game for YOU to try out and haven't got around to loaning you my Xbox to do it. |
