Viacom sues Konami over Rock Revolution peripherals

Last July, Konami filed a lawsuit against Viacom, claiming that the instruments used in the Rock Band games infringed upon patents from its earlier rhythm games like Beatmania and Karaoke Revolution. Today, Bloomberg is reporting that Viacom is now countersuing, claiming that the instruments that come with Konami's Rock Revolution actually infringe on a patent Viacom filed on December 2.

The patent issued by Viacom—the parent company of Rock Band developer Harmonix—claims the instruments used in its games are advanced versions as compared to those originally created by Konami. The lawsuit is hoping to both block sales of Rock Revolution, as well as see some monetary compensation. Konami has yet to comment on the suit, but one has to wonder... how much monetary compensation could one hope to gain from the sales of Rock Revolution?

Clearly this lawsuit is a response to the one originally filed by Konami, just as Konami's suit was a response to the success achieved by the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises, which the company sadly missed out on. There appears to be some bitterness on Konami's part, something that probably wasn't helped by the lackluster performance of Rock Revolution, both critically and commercially.
