G.I Joe game details arise, PSAs included

It was hard not to be skeptical earlier when Electronic Arts announced that it was working on a game based on the upcoming film G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. After all, licensed video games have traditionally been little more than lazy cash-ins designed to attract fans of the films... but we digress. MTV Multiplayer recently got a look at the game, and the first details of the game have us surprisingly excited.

The game is described as "a third-person co-op action game" reminiscent of classics like Contra, Commando, and even more surprisingly, Ikaruga. There also appears to be a lot of granularity for the controls of the game: it can be played simply with one stick to control your character and one button to fire, or more advanced controls can be put in place. 6 playable characters were confirmed—Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Rip Cord, Duke and Heavy Duty—as was the inclusion of vehicles.

Best of all? In spite being a tie-in to the upcoming live-action film, the game appears to have plenty that will appeal to fans of the classic cartoon show. This includes unlockable characters and vehicles that will be familiar to fans of the classic Saturday morning fare. Players will also be able to unlock the infamous G.I. Joe public service announcements, in which the Real American Heroes teach children important life lessons.

These are good signs, but without more information we'll still approach the game with a healthy dose of skepticism. If this ends up being as good as these first details seem to suggest however, we'll be very happy gamers. GO JOE!

I could have sworn the other half was out-breeding those damned Commie bastards.
