Sony wants you to buy games, not Xbox Live
By Ben Kuchera | ArsTechnica

During CES, Sony gave press the argument that the PS3 was actually a great deal... considering all the features that came with the system. That only works if you want those features, and a $400 system is a hard sell even if it comes with an Eva(n?) Longoria love-doll. Sony has now made a second argument that makes much more sense: look at what you can buy for the cost of Xbox Live.

Microsoft's online service costs $50 a year, if you don't find a card on sale, and Sony wants to show you what you could be buying with that money if you were online with your PS3. You have to give it to them: $50 on the PlayStation Network gets you some pretty great stuff.

"Rather than paying a $50 subscription fee that competitors charge for on-line services, PlayStation Network users could put that money towards a variety of content," the company claims. What could you get?

* PAIN ($9.99)
* Elefunk ($4.99)
* Guitar Hero Classic Rock Track ($6.25)
* LittleBigPlanet™ Metal Gear Solid® - Level Kit ($5.99)
* Episode of Afro Samurai | Season 1 ($1.99)
* The Dark Knight Movie ($14.99)
* Samurai Sword Rack, Diesel Tiamallo Blue Hooded Top, Ligne Roset Alster Chair for PlayStation Home ($4.47)

-or-

* Super Street Fighter® II Turbo HD Remix ($14.99)
* Burnout™ Paradise (Full Retail Game) ($19.99)
* The Hoff Character for PAIN ($1.99)
* LittleBigPlanet™ Ryu of Street Fighter® II ($1.99)
* Robot Trooper and Basketball Boots for PlayStation Home ($.98)
* Savage Moon ($9.99)

I'd get rid of the PlayStation Home stuff and slam Everyday Shooter on one of those lists, and I could probably make some other changes, but it's still a compelling argument. Sony doesn't offer as much as Xbox Live does, and maybe it never will, but the fact is the service is free. You don't have to pay to play PS3 games online, and you could put that $50 to better use actually buying games.

Even with an expensive system, this is a good talking point. Why not buy games instead of a service?

Not to mention that when ported correctly, the games on a PS3 will always look prettier and run smoother than the 360.

Yeah, but they don't have an X in their name like we do.

The slang for the Playstation 1 in PSX.

If cost is an issue, think of this.
Screw WoW. Get XBox LIVE. LIVE is only $50 a year, and you can play TONS of games on it, instead of just WoW.

Back on topic.

Yes, PSHome is free. XBox LIVE costs money. But the additional content, demos, and downloads I get on XBox LIVE are well worth the subscription fee. If Sony decided to get on board and offer comparable content online, as well as a comparable game library, I might consider owning a PS3. Let's do some pros and cons.

PS3
Exclusive Games I Want (that have Online Multiplayer): 2
Online Content: Unsatisfying. At last glance, a total demo drought, and less than a dozen full game downloads. (I don't own a PS3, so my info may be slightly out of date)
Subscription Fee: None
Console Cost: $400

XBox 360
Exclusive Games I Want: 8
Online Content: Demos, additional content, full arcade downloads, Community Developed games. I have at least a dozen FULL titles I've downloaded off the service (UMK3, SSFIITHD Remix, Bionic Commando, Fable, Castle Crashers, N+, Portal: Still Alive, Smash TV, TMNT Arcade, to name a few)
Subscription Fee: $50 annual
Console Cost: $200-$400

Bear in mind that there are people like me who simply refuse to make gaming a bill. Which put Xbox off my list.

I was wondering how long it would be before you jumped on this thread just to slam Sony.

Exclusive games I LOVE on Sony: 6
MGS4, Little Big Planet , Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Resistance, Resistance 2

Exclusive Games I haven't tried yet but want to on Sony: 5
Killzone, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, DC Universe Online, God of War 3,

Games I have compared on both systems and enjoyed Sony better: 7
GTA4, Bioshock, Saints Row 2, CoD4, StarWars: The Force Unleashed, Fallout 3 (PC beat both versions.), Street Fighter HD Remix (Mostly due to Xboxs CRAPPY D-PAD!!!!!)

Excluisves for Xbox I give a crap about: 4
GoW, GoW2, Fable 2, Dead Rising

Xbox had a better version: 3
Saints Row 1, Assassin's Creed (didn't need a patch not graphics. I pick working product over better graphics any day of the week), NFS Carbon (controls were tighter for some reason?!? I dunno either.)

Of course since "games I like" is an opinion... Notice I didn't mention Halo... well whatever. You get it.

Online Content: Movies - XBOX Whips the living CRAP out of Sony. While I think it's stupid that everything is split up between Netflix and Marketplace the movies are slightly cheaper (crappier quality) and selection is BIGGER! MUCH BIGGER. My Vote goes with Xbox as a set top for movie downloads.

FULL game downloads - Quantity and retro titles - Xbox once again takes the trophy. Xbox has the biggest selection of games that you can purchase through the marketplace including the Arcade games with that bunch. I AM counting user created content seperate from this bunch.

BUT if you're interested in the WHY that is: The Dev Kit for making games on Xbox is easier for people to use. Take a hint Sony, you need an easier interface. YES your chi is powerful, but nobody wants to learn it.

Demos - I never have a hard time finding Demos for anything I want to try on either system. The only reason I think Xbox has more is because their online only selection is smaller. I can't penalize Sony for not having more demos on the system than what they have available games. Everything that you can play and download on PSN has a demo that you can try first. This is a moot point. - BUT - see "Full game downloads."

additional content - Same as "Demos" - PSN offers ALL the same content for ports that LIVE does. Almost all exclusives have comparable amounts of add-on content to Xbox exclusives. PSN lacks the library of Xbox and is where the lack. But an actual add-on content cant be argued. They can only offer content for what they have - so really were arguing game support here which they do very well.

Community Developed games - Yep, the box might have won... maybe. I know that Xbox has MORE, but I don't know how many I would consider QUALITY. Braid for sure is one of my all time favorites of the genre, I HEARD castle crashers is good, Agis winds is decent enough - if you like it. PS3 has comparable games in this section - of course it has the art games that probably only I will fight for, it has: Fat princess, Burn zombie burn, Rag doll kung fu: fists of Plastic, Zombies, Catan... and thats all I can vouch for. All are HIGH quality user games. Not to say Xbox is not producing some quality games with it's dev kit, I just don't think people are aware of these indi titles on PSN. Advertising may have been a crippling point with them.

I keep pounding the point of all the features you get with Sony - but I lose the battle when people bitch about being able to sacrifice certain features in favor of cost. While I personally like each and every feature on my Sony I don't understand why they can't just drop the wireless LAN, Make a smaller HDD, and other such cuts on a budget box. I think the only thing that shoots these guys in the foot is that they cannot bring thier beast within $50.00 of the Xbox budget box. If the could get the damned thing down to $250.00 I think the sales might be split down the middle between the two. I think people are willing to pay an extra 50 to get the blu-ray if everything else is comparable.

So in short... I don't know. Take from these statements what you will. I've never really been for or against either. I have both because I don't like picking ponies. Sony has better hardware, graphics, and more exclusive games that I like. Xbox has better movie selection, a more fun network interface, and more people I know have one because it's cheaper.

Closing thoughts:

RAT - Quit confusing PSN with HOME. It's annoying. Home is either loved or hated for what it's TRYING to become. Home is a standalone program that... does nothing. Really it's basically a huge chat room with graphics and distractions. PSN is the part of PS3s online content that is actually comparable to Xbox LIVE. You would probably enjoy home if you tried it since it's not what you have been griping about. PSN Store - you probably will hate it no matter what I say.

Hardware - PS has the BEST Blue Ray player on the market inside it. Yeah that $300 blu ray player you have been thinking about getting. PS3 does it better. Why? Hell I don't know - but why not stick a crappier blu ray player in the PS? I mean they did it on PS2... did you ever watch DVD's on that thing? It sucked. Load times were horrible and there were no real features. Why the change - maybe you could cut some costs that way? Blue tooth is great - but it's also costly... make a version with wired controllers or maybe a USB dongle that you have to buy if you want wireless.

Xbox wireless - okay so the Xbox has itegrated wireless controllers. Why cant the system run on that for internet. PS does it... everythings blue tooth. WTF is in Xbox that I have to buy a $100 adapter so I don't need a $12.00 cable for internet but it can connect to my controller just fine? Also - why does the battery life of an Xbox controller suck but my (rumble enabled) PS3 controller lasts for 4 hours longer?!?!

XBOX - YOUR D-PAD SUCKS BALLS!!! I SPENT MONEY ON MK3 JUST TO REALIZE HOW MUCH I HATE MY THUMBS! HAVE MERCY- WE NEED INDIVIDUAL BUTTONS. I want my money back.

Rat: Just think of it this way - Yes the PS3 costs a couple hundred more than the Xbox 360, but if you pay for the Xbox LIVE subscription for a few years, the costs will match up. And besides, it looks like you skewed your numbers a little. For the PS3 you only said 2 exclusive titles that had online multiplayer, but for Xbox 360 you said 8 exclusive titles. Are you only counting the online multiplayer again and just not saying it? Besides, using the fact that online content for PS3 is lacking as an argument and then saying that your info may be out-of-date is not such a good idea. You just shot your own argument to hell that way. Come on over and we can look at the online content on the PS3 and you can make a decision then. There are plenty of demos, full titles and add-ons that can be downloaded on PSN.

I will agree that the Xbox LIVE does have more content since they have more full movies, but when you are paying a subscription I would expect more content than a free service. I would also expect the prices on available content to be lower as well (to justify the subscription) and I don't know if that is the case.

I agree with 8xid that the PS3 also gets a win for the integrated BluRay player feature. What did Xbox 360 have? An external add-on that let you play HD-DVDs (anybody still have any of those?).

Personally I don't really care that much about the online feature. If I use it, I would more than likely be buying new tracks for Rockband or maybe playing a game or two at most. I play the PS3 because I prefer their games and system. And going back to the exclusive PS3 titles, how many of them that you want don't have the online multiplayer? God of War 3? Kingdom Hearts 3 (if they ever release it on PS3 instead of PSP)? Final Fantasy XIII? Tekken 6? Ninja Gaiden Sigma? Come on, at least list the games that you like instead of just giving a number.

I'm not really a console user. I prefer my PC, for the simple reason that if I want to upgrade, I can simply buy a new video card, motherboard, or processor, instead of shelling out another $400 - $600 every year or two. IMHO it's not worth it for someone like me. Besides, PC has better graphics and playability (IMO) than any console out there.

I don't really know that much about the PS3 but I do know a thing or two about the x-box from a development perspective.

In order for people to write games for x-box you have to be a C# programmer (this is what I do). But, microsoft made game development in C# difficult to learn and is different than traditional C#, yet it's not something you can just pick up without learning C# first. The development package is an add-on to Visual Studio 2008 called XNA. XNA allows you to create games, screensavers, and simple programs, for the PC and x-box 360. It's totally free (if you get the express edition) to use, but IMO isn't worth it unless you just want to see how a game is created. It's a very long and difficult process and most games created using XNA (by individual developers) are crap.

Aside from the previously mentioned features of x-box the only other useful thing it can do is have linux or windows installed on it, though I consider this a waste. Either have a computer, or don't. Simple as that.

If I were to buy a console I would definately buy PS3 just because I've seen the graphic comparison between the PS3 and the X-BOX and I like the graphic quality of the PS3 better.

As for the comment about the subscription stuff on x-box live.. it sounds like a glorified Steam service to me, only I prefer steam. To me, console vs PC just reminds me of that song "anything you can do I can do better", and fortunately PC wins hands down.

I may be a bit off in my opinion, but it is my opinion, like it or hate it.

On the other hand, you never have to tweak your console to play a game that's designed for it. And consoles are small, so it's easier to, say, keep an N64 so that I can play Conker than it is to keep an old PC so that I can play Myth.

point taken. not really debating between pc games and console games, just saying that "FOR ME" pc games are better as every 1 - 2 years when they release a new console, the games they make aren't backward compatible with previous console versions, which means to play the newest games you have to have the newest console. For the money, I'd rather upgrade my computer, which is MY primary gaming platform.
that's all I'm sayin.

fyi: I still have 2 n64's lol

1) Playstation 3 is also Windows and Linux compatible.
2) Playstation hardrives can be upgraded with any generic HDD or can use a removeable HDD (formatted corectly.)
3) I mean"DOngle" in the nicest possible way. :)
4) PC's are more powerful, more easily upgraded, and sometimes have better controls.
5) PCs are more expensive, Bulky, Have more issues, and lack exclusive games.
6) Never bring a PC to a console fight.
7) Never bring a Wii to a console fight.
8) Never bring a console anywhere because they break to easy these days.
9) PC games are $10.00 cheaper than console versions of the same game AND in the case of PS3 sometimes STILL have better graphics even though they are printed on DVDs instead of Blue Ray AND sometimes have more content?!? Why has nobody noticed this? Someone somewhere is ripping off the end user.
10) This list is already too long.
11) BAckward Compatibillity argument: They release crappier versions of the game for older consoles for a few years before abandoning the firmware. Many of the new consoles are backward compatible in that you can play old game son them. Sony is the worst, xbox got better support, Wii won the BC fight. As bad a sony is on backward compatibillity, it still kiscks PCs ass - if you running windows. LOL.
12) Steam kills LIVE, Wii, and PSN. Why can't Steam be downloaded to consles yet!?!? All they would have to do is offer movie downloads and arcade games.
13) Boobs are awesome. That's why I grew my own!

I'm done now.

PC Games that never went to console:

Counter-Strike: Source
Crysis
Half-Life 2
Quake 3
Civilization I - IV
Ceasar I - III
Fallout 2
Galactic Civilization I, II
Star Wars: Empire At War
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
Far Cry ... (Far Cry: Instincts was for consoles)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Titan Quest
Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Battlefield 2
Neverwinter Nights 2
Space Force: Rogue Universe
Star Trek: Starfleet Command II: Empires at War
Crysis
Dungeon Siege 2

Why did many of these games never make it to console? Especially crysis?

And the ultimate benefit of consoles (this coming from me.. *laugh*)...
The same game run on PC and console will run smoother on console because computer have background processes and multiple applications loaded. Not to mention that windows/linux/mac operating systems all have to reserve a specific amount of memory and disk space. Consoles do not have this limitation as their software is only designed to play games. So what operating system do they use on 99.9% of consoles to play the games? LINUX!!

To 8xid's #7: Stick your head in the sand if you like. Wii is still #1 by a huge margin, and the software is catching up. I'm genuinely excited about some of the titles that are upcoming.

To Jester: I feel I would be wrong if I didn't point out that I own Battlefield 2 for PS2, although it's not the same game. I also own Civilization for SNES, although it is AWFUL without a mouse.

Correction: Not there Aren't exclusive games for the PC. There generally not as popular...
Here are my smart-assed answers for your list. LOL

Counter-Strike: Source - Because it's a MOD
Crysis - EA is developing this as a multi-player console game
Half-Life 2 - This IS on console.
Quake 3 - N64 was the console at the time this was big (without internet arena shooters kind of sucked. Would have been 4 player split screen.)
Civilization I - IV - Because it sucks
Ceasar I - III - Dito
Fallout 2 - Because consoles suck
Galactic Civilization I, II - Because IT sucks
Star Wars: Empire At War - It is on PSP, I own it.
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance - Think this is on N64
Far Cry ... (Far Cry: Instincts was for consoles) - Basically the same game. They rock. You can also get Far Cry for Wii
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl - Because Consoles suck
Titan Quest - Really?
Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific - This series is lame
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Because the console gamers attention span isn't this big.
Battlefield 2 - No online consoles when this came out.
Neverwinter Nights 2 - Because the console gamers attention span isn't this big.
Space Force: Rogue Universe - Nobody has played it.
Star Trek: Starfleet Command II: Empires at War - Board games should stay that way.
Crysis - You listed this twice
Dungeon Siege 2 - Because nobody cares, people play Diablo.

To Dix: Nintendo always leads in sales. They have that super retard strength when it comes to marketing. Just because retirement homes are upgrading their lobbies with Wii's for the patients doesn't mean crap. Although I am mildly interested in Nintendo's Wii Nap-Time game. I think it's played with a motion sensitive pillow and a bottle of ambient.

You know, I love it when our threads devolve into our usual good natured a$$hatery.

In any event, declaring one supreme winner in the Console/PC war is impossible. It is too much like Rock/Paper/Scissors. PS3 wins on Graphics (usually), X360 wins on game selection, Wii wins on game innovation, and PC's can be tailored to peg out any or all categories if the right amount of money is spent and programs can be found.

I however prefer the PS3, mostly because Insomniac Games is PS centric. I loves me some Ratchet & Clank. Oh, and let's not forget God of War and Devil May Cry.

Civ 3 and Civ 4 are two of the greatest games ever for PC.

And Civ 4 is on Xbox360, though they had to sacrifice game depth to pull it off. Religion is gone, as are half the diplomatic options.
